OLD STUFF:
Mel sends his thanx to all of you who sent emails, and said hello to him during his travels in 2002 and 2003. Hopefully he'll be "thankful" enough to keep his website more up to date and less "Under Construction". Here are some highlights of 2002, 2003 and the latest Mel Brown News:
Mel Brown's 1st Solo CD:
Recording is going on as you read this. More groove - more blowing. ‘Nuff Said…
Marion Meadows CD:
Mel just finished recording some tracks on the 2004 release from Marion Meadows. The CD sounds great and features the production of the very cool Mike B. More Later -
Khani Cole Productions:
Mel Brown is working with Khani Cole Productions in Phoenix AZ. Mel relocated his Denver CO home to Arizona, and is thrilled about the gig. The band is very strong and features Raul Yanez (keys) and Mike Florio (drums). Khani Cole (Vocals) has several original CDs and performs Wed through Sat at the Pointe Hilton Resort in AZ. Khani regularly features special guests and is a regular at smooth jazz festivals nationwide. Joey Defrancesco, George Benson, Eric Marienthal, Brian Bromberg, Richard Smith, and Marion Meadows are among recent guests. Though Mel still records frequently in LA, he works those activities around Cole and his new home life. "The gig allows me to stay home full time and still play without living in LA or anywhere else," says Mel. I don't want to tour right now. I want to concentrate on other aspects of my life & career. This situation is a perfect match for the most important thing that I'm trying to accomplish now and that's being a good daddy. I have 2 great kids and I want to be home as much as possible."
TLC:
Mel shook his booty in an ad campaign on The Learning Channel. Mel dressed up in an Afro, a white polyester suit, a hot pink shirt and platform shoes for a "Back To the 70’s" ad on The Learning Channel. See a picture in the photos section.
The Nutty Professor 2:
For those of you that may be curious, The Klumps is available on home video and DVD! This movie is also making the rounds on cable. Watch for Mel playing the red bass next to Eddie Murphy in the last scene of this box office smash from Universal Pictures. You check also out a picture on the "Photos" page.
Viva Rock Vegas:
The Flintstones "Viva Rock Vegas" is available on home video and DVD. Watch for Mel’s brief left handed bass cameo in this comedy from Universal Pictures. If you see Mel be sure to ask him how he tuned that thing! Check out the picture of his pedicure promoting performance in the photos page.
Brian McKnight:
Mel B. was seen on the set of another episode of Soul Train with R&B superstar Brian McKnight. The show was a tribute to Brian's International success (over 15 million albums sold worldwide) and marked the release of his latest CD called U Turn. The show aired for the first time in May 2003 but reruns are pretty common. This was Brown's 2nd performance on the show with Mcknight - past performances have included Motown Live, BET Live, The Queen Latifah Show and tour dates. Trivia - Mel really enjoyed this filming because Soul Train is filmed on the same Paramount lot that Mel did his first major TV gig - the famous Stage 29, where Mel got his first big break performing with Arsenio Hall's Band.
Kenny Lattimore:
Mel was seen holding down the bottom for Arista Recording artist Kenny Lattimore. Kenny was touring in support of his CD called Weekend. The band was very strong and featured Tony Moore (Drums), Tommy Organ (Guitar) Darrell Diaz on Keys (Darrell Diaz is also Herbie Hancock's Musical Director), William Rivera (Vocals - Sang the theme song for the Eddie Murphy film called "ShowTime".) and The Lovely Sy Smith (Vocals - You can hear Sy singing the theme song for "Soul Food" with Al Green.) Kenny's new wife Chante Moore dropped by to share the vocal duties on a few shows as well. The band was sharing a bill with Babyface in New York City when the terrorists attacked the World Trade Center on September 11. Brown arrived in Newark on American Airlines with his bandmates on the night of September 10. Face arrived in Newark the morning of the 11th - also on American. It's believed that Face & Co. walked right past the terrorists and those who died as he made his way to the baggage claim that day. All of our hearts go out to those that lost friends and relatives in the attack.
Kevin Toney:
Mel appeared on some tracks of Kevin Toney's CD project called Sweet Spot. You can check it out in the "Discography" section of this site. The CD will also feature work from outstanding bassists Victor Bailey and Ernest Tibbs. Mel handled all of the bass work on the 2002 smooth jazz release from Kevin Toney called “Strut”. "Strut" did well on the charts and is still getting airplay. A highlight of that project is a tune called "Secret Agent" - an action tune that features Mel's insistent groove as well as his trademark melodic slapping while trading fours with Toney. Shanachie Records has also released "Smooth Jazz Plays Duke Ellington" a CD that features up to date versions of classic Duke Ellington tunes. The CD features Kevin Toney, Everette Harp, and Chuck Loeb to name a few. Mel handled the bass work on all of tracks of that CD as well.
David Lanz:
Look for Mel on "Lost In Paradise" a release from Multi - Platinum artist David Lanz. The very personable Keyboardist invited Mel to perform on several tracks of this very musical CD. Since Mel was overdubbing alone he & Lanz had plenty of time to indulge in another of Mel's passions - STARBUCKS! Be sure to check out Lanz's website for more info about his "Heavy Mellow" music that features production by Gregg Karukas & Dave Koz. There are also performances by Peter White, Michael Thompson, and Luis Conte among others. Mel shared the bass chair on 1 cut with Bassist Jimmy Johnson (Mr. Flim himself). You can check out some of the music in the "Discography" section of this site.
Gregg Karukas:
And speaking of Gregg Karukas, now's a good time to mention that Mel worked on this very talented keyboardist's 2003 release on the N2K label. Mel has done some live dates with Gregg's band as well. Karukas always has some of the top sidemen on his stage and on his CD's. Mel performed on 4 tracks of the latest CD called "Heatwave'. Will Kennedy served up some serious groove along with Paul Jackson Jr., Michael O'Neill and Rick Braun. "Your Sweet Smile' was the first single and word in the street is there will be a second single as well.
Keiko Matsui Live CD and DVD
Mel toured the US, Japan, Singapore, and South Africa with Keiko Matsui in 2002 and part of 2003. The tour of Japan was recorded and filmed. The package is now available in a CD/DVD package. Check out Keiko's website for purchase info on the CD "Live In Tokyo". The CD features Kazu Matsui, Mike Ghegan on Sax, and Alberto DeAlmar on Guitars and Jon Dresal on Drums. If you are a fan of Keiko's you will love this CD! A live DVD is also included if you'd like to see the band at home.
Michael Ghegan
And speaking of Michael Ghegan, this fella just dropped one of the tightest CD's around. Mel B & Michael Bland (Formerly of Prince's band) dropped some serious pocket on these ultra modern grooves that are smooth and neo-soul at the same time. Mike is currently on tour with Pat Mcghee, Michelle Branch and Keiko Matsui. Check out Mike G's bag in the "Discography" section of this site.
Kloud 9:
Mel B appears on 2 tracks of this release of the Nashville twins Debut CD. Kloud 9 is making big noise so be sure to check out their site.
Mel Joins Metro:
Mel recently joined the fusion group Metro. The group has 3 CD's and features Chuck Loeb (guitar), Mitch Foreman (keyboards) and Wolfgang Hafner (drums). This band has a history of hiring outstanding bassists. Their first self titled CD featured the legendary stylings of Anthony Jackson.(Brown actually subbed for AJ on Michel Camilo's gig some years back.) Two others CDs entitled "Tree People" and "Metrocafe" featured Victor Bailey. Mel replaced Bailey who is promoting a new solo project of his own. After the new lineup recorded its first CD, they headed off to Spain for a tour and some sightseeing. Hear some of the CD in the "Discography" section and check the pics on the "Photos" page.
Soulful Songs:
Mel Brown's name was spotted in the credits of a Gospel CD released on Harborwood records. The CD is called "Songs for the Soul" and it features some of the biggest names in Gospel including Yolanda Adams, Daryl Coley, Fred Hammond & RFC, and Commissioned. Also playing bass on the CD is the inimitable Andrew Gouche. (Mel says "If you've never heard "The Gooch", you've got to check him out. He's sounds REALLY good on the Bass") Mel traveled to Nashville to perform on 3 tracks that feature the very soulful tenor sax of Kirk Whalum - check it out in the "Discography" section.
Arnold McCuller:
Mel has been playing with one the most respected vocalist/background vocalists of our time, Mr. Arnold McCuller. Arnold has been a background vocalist with James Taylor for over 25 years. Arnold has performed on some of the biggest hits of our time. Mel performed on Arnold's 2002 effort - a live recording made at the Famous Baked Potato in LA. Lately, the great Michael Landau has been in the guitar chair for live dates. The CD features Brad Cole on keys, Toss Panos on drums, and Corky James on guitar. (You may have seen Corky's name in the credits on Avril Levine's smash debut CD. Lamont Vanhook and Fred White handled the backing vocals. Arnold has a great website and he has some really good CD's that you can purchase online as well. Brad Cole, longtime keyboardist with Phil Collins referred Mel to Arnold.
Marc Anthony:
Mel performed on a live video of Marc's single "Tragedy" in early 2002. The video was earmarked for Europe and features the singer's Pop band. Mel is also sending a big shout out to Erben Perez (Bassist for Marc's Salsa band). Erben played on Marc's Spanish release "Libre" which went gold) Mel's not touring with Marc anymore (The 2002 Olympics was Mel's final performance with the superstar) and wishes everyone in the organization well. Mel sends a very special thanx to Bigram Zayaz and to Kenneth Crouch for handling business like it should be handled.
Rayford Griffin:
Mel's been performing around LA with drummer Rayford Griffin. The All Star band includes Nick Smith (keys), Everette Harp (sax), Dwight Sills (guitar), Mark Ledford (trumpet), Lenny Castro (perc) and the fabulous Sandy Simmons (vocals). As always, Rayford is sounding great. Mel B. performed on a track of Rayford's new CD as well - you can check it out in the "Discography" section of this site. The CD features Stanley Clarke, Larry Kimpel, Sekou Bunch, Keith Jones, Mel B., Branford Marsalis, George Duke among others and is available from Rayford's website.
Chad Michael Wright
The debut release for this Pop/Contemporary Christian Singer/Songwriter is surprisingly strong. Production work was handled by Mel's good friend Darren Rahn and is some of Darren's strongest work to date. There is a funky 4 bar Mel Brown solo but for the most part the CD required just straight up groove. We also heard that Chad just got his first publishing deal in Nashville. Nice one Chad.
Taylor Mesple
Taylor Mesple has finished his CD entitled "Victory Land". Rhythm was locked down with Abe Laboriel Jr. and Mel B. The slamming groove of Mr. Christian Teele is also heard. The track "Just Begun" contains one of the most wicked Mel Brown solos ever recorded - it's in the "Discography" section and in the “Soloing” section of this site.
Judd Grossman
One word to describe this CD is "Eclectic". Brown serves up some early prince style funk on the first track and some nice wah wah bass on "Heart You Gave Me". This one is definitely an acquired taste!
Richard Smith
Mel has been playing bass around LA with smooth jazz guitarist Richard Smith. The band features Hans Zermuellen (keys) and Bubba Bryant (drums). Richard is going to be doing a lot more live dates and if you can check it out you should - this unit SLAMS and the CD sounds great. Mel didn't play on the CD - those tracks were handled by the very capable Brian Bromberg.
Jeff Kashiwa
Mel B. was spotted hitting at the Breckenridge Jazz Festival and at Catalina Island Jazz Festival with Jeff Kashiwa, Keiko Matsui, and David Mann. Kashiwa's rhythm section of Dave Hooper, Allen Hinds, and Dave Kochanski was smoking'… and speaking of Allen,
Allen Hinds
Mel just finished recording a track on Allen's up coming CD. If you've never heard Allen play you are in for a very special treat. Mr. Hinds is about as tasty as they come - don't miss this one. Allen is also going to be heard on Mel's upcoming solo CD.
Blake Aaron Smith
Mel usually does gigs around LA with Blake, but joined him in Vegas for a killer set at the Orleans Hotel. The band featured Ronnie Guitierrez (drums) and Mike Whittaker (keys) and the guitar work of Smith. Mel also handled the lion's share of the bass work on Smith's new CD called "Bringin' It Back". Rob MacDonald and the ruthlessly funky Alex Al handled other bass work. Drums were provided by the great Joey Heredia.
Two Bass Hits:
LA bassist Larry Antonino has a solo project called "Village Strut". Larry has been doing some live dates around LA and Mel has been playing low bass while Larry stretches out. "Larry put together a very strong CD", says Mel. "The gig is a lot of fun because Larry plays melodies and plays bass as well. All I have to do is stay out of his way!" The two bassists do get to show off a little by rolling through a blistering version of "Teen Town". Larry also sings and plays a baritone guitar on the gig, which gives it a great variety of sounds. The drum chair has included Joel Taylor, Dave Hooper, and Joey Heredia. Mel has also been seen holding the groove for Bass Titan Brian Bromberg. The band was last seen in Vegas playing material from Brian's release called "Jaco".
Profile:
Thanx to everyone for your interest in the Mel Brown Profile (or MBP as some of you put it). Mel sincerely apologizes for the delay in getting them out to all of you: "I had no idea the response would be so big and positive. I'm the only person that puts the packages together. I do the printing, cutting, stuffing and mailing myself. After the article in Bass Player I just couldn't keep up! I hope everyone that sent me an envelope accepts my apologies for the delay. I recently finished a new batch of Profile packages with a completely redesigned J-card. They are already being mailed so please let me know when you get them. I hope it's been worth the wait!" You can read what the magazines say about the Profile on the "Rag On Mel" page, but if you're interested in seeing it for yourself email him at Mel@melbrown.net. Give him your info and he'll drop one in the mail for you. The influence of this amazing device is obvious and others have followed Mel's lead by using similar devices to present themselves to potential employers.
Global Bass:
A feature about the Mel Brown Profile appeared in the online magazine "Global Bass". Mel hooked up with the author in a New York hotel lobby and shared some insights about the making of his revolutionary device! Check out the article in the "Rag On Mel" section of this site.
Bass Player Magazine:
The February 2002 issue of Bass Player Magazine featured an article about Mel’s Enhanced CD Profile. It can be found on page 30.The article also includes a small excerpt from Mel’s slapped bass solo on "Mr. Coltrane", an original funk tribute based on the "Giant Steps" changes. You can read the article in the "Rag On Mel" section of this site. You can see a clip in the "Solos" section of this site.
